Der amerikanische Komponist John Tatgenhorts (East Liverpool, Ohio, 1938) hat zuerst viele Werke für Schulblasorchester geschrieben. Verschiedene seiner Ouvertüren, unter denen besonders die Ouvertüre 'Tanglewood' sind weltüber erfolgreich geswesen. Die spektakuläre Komposition für Sinfonisches Blasorchester 'Above and beyond' entspricht ganz gut dem Titel. Es gibt nicht nur eine umfangreiche Partei für das Schlagzeug, sondern es gibt auch Parteien für Klavier, Harfe und Celli. Das Werk wurde im Auftrag der United States Air Force Band, Washington und ihres Dirigenten Alan Bonner komponiert.
